2022 US LIFE EXPECTANCY STATISTICS BY GENDER, STATE, AND DISEASE (COVID-19)
WHAT IS LIFE EXPECTANCY?
Life Expectancy is the statistical expectation of how long someone will live at birth based on a number of factors such as socioeconomics, demographic, geographics, thermographic, stenographic, idiographic, and historiographics.
To answer the question “What is life expectancy”? Let’s use an example:
When you are born, based on a number of factors I’m not really sure I understand, people with fancy math degrees create an algorithm that can determine the average lifespan.
Of course, if you look at each person individually, the number will rarely be accurate because it adds everyone up together to get an average.
That means many people will die before the number and many people will die after the number but when added together, that will give you the average life expectancy.
WHY DOESN’T EVERYONE HAVE THE SAME LIFE EXPECTANCY AGE?
Your life expectancy in the US is different based on the State you are born in, your race, gender, and a number of other factors.
Let’s consider an example (below) of how two people —born the same day— can have completely different life expectancies:
If you were a male born in California you’d have a life expectancy of 80.9 years, whereas, if you were a male born in Alabama it would be considerably lower at 74.6 years. Why is this?
Why is the life expectancy for a male in California so much higher than one in Alabama?
There are a number of factors that affect the number, including, quality of life, local food choices, culture, gender, access to healthcare, socioeconomics, and race.
Or, it may just be as simple as California is known as the land of ‘fruits and nuts’, whereas; Alabama is famous for FRYING EVERYTHING… from Fried Green Tomatoes to Twice-Fried-Catfish.
The life expectancy of a particular person will depend on many factors.
LIFE EXPECTANCY DEFINITION
Life expectancy can be calculated in many different ways, from an average life expectancy in the US of 80.3 which includes everyone from everywhere in the US.
To a much more specific demographic view of the USA life expectancy of a specific gender, race, in a specific city in the US.
Many government and private organizations collect life expectancy data for various reasons, be it, health, safety or, business.
The definition of life expectancy changes based on the number of factors you want to consider.
The OECD, has said this much better than I could ever…
Life expectancy is defined as the average number of years that people of a particular age could expect to live if they experienced the age and sex-specific mortality rates prevalent in a given country in a particular year. Since the determinants of longevity change slowly, life expectancy is best analysed over a long time horizon.

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT US LIFE EXPECTANCIES
There are a few caveats to be aware of as you review life expectancy rates across the US. The most prominent issue is that these estimates are not equally applicable across demographics, especially when considering ethnicity and race.
As mentioned earlier, socioeconomic status and healthcare access also play a prominent role in determining how long someone might live. Unfortunately, many Black, Latino, Asian, and Native American people are disproportionately afflicted with low income, barring their access to medical care.
Thus, ethnic or racial background and income are deeply intertwined with healthcare access and life expectancy.
Other compounding factors include:
- Gender
- Genetics
- Lifestyle
- Marital status

2022 LEADING CAUSES OF DEATH IN THE US
Many health conditions have run rampant in the United States for several years, far before 2022. Yet, several have persisted into this year, still taking lives all the while.
Among those widespread illnesses is the coronavirus, which, despite its incredibly recent emergence in Wuhang, has now taken more than 2.5 million lives globally. Sadly, US citizens account for over 20% of those deaths. Here’s a closer look at the coronavirus’s impact and additional leading causes of death in the US.
2022 TEXTING AND DRIVING STATISTICS: HOW MANY PEOPLE DIE FROM TEXTING AND DRIVING IN THE US?
Texting and driving are some of the deadliest issues in the United States. In fact, texting while driving has been proven to be six times as dangerous as drinking alcohol or taking drugs. This article will explore texting and driving statistics for 2022, including texting and driving statistics from 2022, texting while distracted stats from 2022, texting while distracted stats on accidents from 2022, and texting while distracted deaths from 2022.

THE 10 STATES WITH THE MOST DISTRACTED DRIVERS
The article discusses the 10 states with the most distracted drivers and what is being done to curb this epidemic. The first state on the list, Texas, has both a comprehensive statewide texting ban as well as a hands-free law for novice drivers. Both of these laws are in place to ensure that texters can’t text while driving and new drivers don’t have distractions while they learn how to drive safely.
However, there’s only so much that can be done when it comes to enforcing laws like these. To make sure people follow them, we need more than just legislation – we also need education and awareness campaigns about how dangerous distracted driving is.
• Save your life and the lives of others – don’t text and drive
• Stay safe on the roads – use hands-free texting when driving
• Lower risk of accidents while driving by resisting the temptation to text or call friends/family/colleagues while behind the wheel
• Drive more efficiently with fewer distractions like phone calls or texting
• Practice safe texting habits like texting with one hand and not texting while you’re on the move
The following are just some of the stats listed in this article: – In 2022 alone, over 18 million young drivers used their cellphones to send or read text messages while driving.
Distracted driving is a common cause of car accidents. You may not realize the danger you are putting yourself in by texting and driving, but it’s there. According to The National Safety Council, drivers who text are 23% more likely to be involved in a crash than non-distracted drivers. It only takes 6 seconds for your reaction time to slow down 37%. That could mean the difference between life and death on our roads today.
WHAT DISEASES ARE THE LEADING CAUSES OF DEATH IN THE US?
Currently, the most well-known cause of death in the United States is the coronavirus (Covid 19). Present estimates show that this country has had more than 29 million individual cases of the viral illness to date and over 520,700 deaths. Of the ongoing active cases (9,096,024), 15,871 of them are serious or critical. It represents the third leading cause of death in the country.
There is not yet a cure for the coronavirus, but hopes are rising for a slowdown in the spread as the vaccine rolls out. Still, progress is slow. There are approximately 382.2 million people in the United States. Yet, only 66,464,947 vaccines have been administered of the 88,669,035 that have been distributed thus far.
These numbers represent only the tip of the iceberg, given that anything less than a 50% immunization rate is considered “low.” The country doesn’t need 100% vaccination to stop the spread, but much more is needed to make a real impact.
Still, despite how much chaos the disease has wrought in the country, it is still not the sole leading cause of death. It falls behind two illnesses that had long affected Americans far before the COVID-19 evolved: heart disease and cancer.
OTHER TOP CAUSES OF DEATH IN THE US
For years, heart disease has remained at the top of the list of US causes of death. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), it kills the most men and women across the country. Plus, it has the furthest reach across racial and ethnic groups nationwide.
Annually, heart disease accounts for one in every four deaths, totaling to about 655,000. It emerges in many forms, but the most widespread types are coronary artery disease (about 18.2 million adults ages 20 and up have CAD) and heart attacks. The CDC estimates that one heart attack happens about every 40 seconds in the US.
Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States. Although the death rate gradually decreased between 1999 to 2019 by approximately 27%, it still has a devastating impact on the American population. As of 2019, cancer was responsible for 146.2 out of every 100,000 deaths nationwide.
The most prominent types of cancer diagnoses are as follows:
- Lung
- Colorectal
- Pancreatic
- Breast
- Prostate
- Liver and intrahepatic bile duct
The coronavirus is quickly gaining on heart disease (ranking as the first of the leading causes of death in the US) and cancer (ranked number two) as the third leading cause of death in the United States. Still, the population is hopeful that the vaccine rollout will slow the spread.
The best thing you can do to protect yourself from these illnesses is consult your primary care physician to learn the risk factors and how you can reduce your exposure.
2022 saw for the first time in over a century the #1 American killer, Heart Disease, supplanted by Covid-19 as the #1 leading cause of death in the US.
Easily surpassing Heart Disease, Alzheimer’s and Dementia combined as the number one leading cause of death in the United States.
It will be interesting to see if influenza and pneumonia fall off the list by the end of the year as reports are showing that flu cases are at a record low in 2022.
On February 3, 2022 the CDC announced a new leading cause of death in the US, Covid-19.
Now, if you combine Heart disease and cancer they are the leading causes of death in the US in 2022.
Many health professionals and doctors speculate that some of the rise in respiratory diseases 14.3 deaths per 100,000 and chronic lower respiratory 40.9/100,000 may also be contributed to the Coronavirus, Covid-19.
2022 DEATHS AND INJURIES BY ANIMALS, INSECTS & MARINE LIFE
Snakes killed 6 people in 2022, Bears killed 2 people, Reptiles excluding snakes injured 1,050 people but did not kill anyone. For instance there was no reported crested gecko maulings in 2022. Cougars, coyotes and wolves each killed 1 person in 2022.

Coexisting conditions like diabetes and heart disease can reduce life expectancy with COPD. Lifestyle choices like smoking will likewise negatively impact COPD life expectancy.
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease this is a disease in the lungs that obstructs the air flow.
When diagnosed with COPD your life expectancy can be estimated based on a test that determines your ability to forcefully exhale air from your lungs.
40 – 70 % of people diagnosed with COPD are living 5 years after finding out.
However, generally, 6 years is the average life expectancy for COPD.
CAN I GET LIFE INSURANCE WITH COPD?

US LIFE EXPECTANCY STAGE 3 KIDNEY DISEASE
This health problems biggest question is, ‘What is chronic kidney disease life expectancy Stage 3?’ Kidney disease is the moderate to severe loss of kidney function. They measure kidney function by assigning a eGFR function rate, a number between 30 – 59 ml/min indicates stage 3 kidney disease.
So, I’m sure you are thinking, ‘What is stage 3 kidney disease life expectancy?’
Life expectancy for stage 3 kidney disease can be quite long with recent estimates for a 40 year old being an additional 24 years from diagnosis for men and 28 years from diagnosis for woman.
Here’s the thing, stage 3 kidney disease life expectancy elderly lowers to an estimated 8 years for a man and 11 years for a woman who is 60 years at diagnosis.
Stage three of kidney disease is where life expectancy decreases dramatically. At this stage, kidney function reduces to 59-30ml/min making them close to useless and the need for dialysis prevalent. Fortunately, stage 3 kidney disease life expectancy is much better than stage 4 or 5.
Men at the age of 40 can survive 24 more years while women can survive 28.
For a 70-year-old patient or older, the life expectancy stage 3 kidney disease is 6-8 years for men and women.
However, you also need to consider the progression of the disease. Ideally, you will stay in stage three and recover. Then, your life expectancy will remain the same. Further advancement of the disease will mean fewer years to live.
STAGE 3 KIDNEY DISEASE LIFE EXPECTANCY WITHOUT DIALYSIS
As you can imagine, any Kidney functions that are less than optimal will greatly affect your health. Dialysis is a process that helps clean and filter your blood when your kidney’s are unable to.

STAGE 4 KIDNEY DISEASE LIFE EXPECTANCY IN THE US
Stage 4 kidney disease is classified as severe loss of kidney function. The eGFR for Stage 4 Kidney disease is only 15 – 30 ml/min. Sometimes this is referred to as, ‘end stage renal disease life expectancy.’
The average life expectancy for stage 4 kidney disease for a 40 year old is 10.4 years for men and 9.1 years for women.
Adhering to the advice of your doctor can greatly increase your life expectancy with Stage 4 Kidney disease.

Predictably, the older you are, the less time you have after reaching stage four. Men who are 40 years old can survive fourteen years after reaching stage four. A woman of the same age can stay alive up to 16 years.
After you reach 70 years old, life expectancy decreases. A 70-year-old man or woman in stage four can only live for four more years at a maximum.
Stage 4 chronic kidney disease life expectancy can depend strongly on the patients dialysis schedule.
If the patient doesn’t receive regular dialysis, life expectancy stage 4 kidney disease is even lower. A person with kidney failure can die in two days without dialysis, depending on how functional their kidneys are.
CAN I GET LIFE INSURANCE WITH STAGE 4 KIDNEY DISEASE?
No, stage 4 kidney disease life insurance is not available at this time for a fully underwritten policy but a guaranteed issue whole life insurance policy – no medical questions asked – is available for stage 4 kidney disease.

Heart disease life expectancy has become such a common cause of death that the statistics on length of life after diagnosis are pretty accurate. Below is a table for the life expectancy congestive heart failure.
Stage | 5-Year Survival Rate |
---|---|
A: High heart failure risk; no structural heart disease or symptoms of failure | 97% |
B: High failure risk, but no symptoms; the presence of structural heart disease | 95.7% |
C: High failure risk with failure symptoms and structural heart disease | 74.6% |

The Bottom Line?
It should probably go without saying that Life Expectancy Statistics play a HUGE ROLE in how Underwriters determine the price of Life Insurance— i.e. how they arrive at your premium cost.
Investopedia features an excellent article on this:
Life Expectancy: It’s More Than Just A Number
Life expectancy is the single most influential factor that insurance companies use to determine life insurance premiums. Understanding how insurance companies use the concept of life expectancy —and how it is calculated for the insured — can help you decide when to purchase a policy, how to calculate the future potential value of your policy, and what to consider when choosing an annuity payout option.

That said, Life Expectancy Statistics are —by definition— estimations AND averages, based on several factors (socioeconomic, demographic, geographic, thermographic, stenographic, idiographic, and historiographic). So, getting your own free personalized quote —AND consulting with an experienced broker, about your specific health circumstances— is certainly advised.
